What is Cheerleading?

Competitive Cheerleading is a sport where a team of 10-24 people perform a 2 minute routine to music that includes stunts, tumbling, jumps, a pyramid, and a dance. This routine is performed at competitions against other cheer teams. There are many categories the team can compete in based on age, skill level, and gender.

Gameday Cheerleading takes place on the side of various sports games including football, ice hockey, and rugby games. It involves doing chants, stunts, and tumbling to help keep the crows involved in the game and to support the team playing.

At USG Cheerleading, we do both, with a larger focus on competitive cheerleading.

Stunts

Stunting can be done by just 2 people (one-man),

4 people (stunt group), or the whole team (pyramid). In a standard stunt group there is a flyer (girl on top), 2 bases who lift the flyer, and a backspot to lift from the back.

Tumbling

Tumbling involves doing series of flips or twists. Examples of this are cartwheels, backhandsprings, back tucks, round-off fulls. You do not need to have tumbling before joining- but it helps!

Jumps

Jumps include toe-touches, hurdles, and pikes. They are often done together with some type of standing tumbling at the end.

Dance & Cheer

The dance is your chance in the routine to have some fun and show the judges how much you love your routine!

The cheer is done before the routine and is designed to get the crowd excited.

Our Cheer Program

Our cheer program begins accepting new team members in the Summer and at the beginning of the Fall Semester during our tryouts. After tryouts, we only accept members with previous cheer experience if the team still has open spots.

Our team meets 2 times per week for 2 hour practices at the University Sport Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Throughout the season, members should be prepared to attend several social events with the team & other HSG clubs as well as several sports games and competitions in the spring semester. Attendance at practices and events is mandatory.

Throughout the season, you will learn our team's routine for competitions as well as many new stunts and tumbling sequences. If you are joining without any prior cheer experience, don't worry! Our experienced coaches and your teammates will help you learn everything you need to know.
